The average salary for professionals in this specialty is a healthy $51,770 per year. In comparison, the average annual salary for this field in the US as a whole is $58,520. Supervisory positions in radiologic technology were the highest earners, drawing around $80,000 per year.

Entry-level radiologic technologist positions tended to be the lowest earners, taking in about $42,510 per year. [+]

Radiology Requirements in Georgia

There are no state-mandated requirements to practice radiologic science in the state of Georgia. However, almost all respected employers of radiologic technologists will require their employees to be licensed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Beginning in 2015, the ARRT will require all persons who wish to sit for their exam to have a minimum of an associates degree. Individuals who already have an associates degree or higher will not need to earn an Associates in radiologic technology in order to be eligible.

Well-Known Schools for Radiology in Georgia

Emory University: This renowned university offers two advanced degree programs in medical imaging, or radiologic technology. They have a Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging for individuals who have already earned an associates degree from another institution, and they have a Master of Science in Medical Imaging for continuing students in their own program or from another four-year college. A bachelors degree in this field qualifies graduates for better-paying positions, while a masters allows graduates to work as a radiologist assistant.

Chattahoochee Technical College: Chattahoochee Technical College has been ranked as one of the best two-year colleges in Georgia by Campus Explorer. The school offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiography (radiologic technology). The curriculum centers around preparing graduates to sit for the ARRT exam.

Other Schools to Consider

Augusta University: The Medical College of Georgia and Georgia Health Sciences University have recently combined to form Augusta University. This school offers bachelor of science and master of science degrees that allow students to specialize in fields such as radiation therapy, medical sonography, and nuclear medicine. These specialties qualify graduates for highly-skilled positions at higher salary levels.

College of Coastal Georgia: The College of Coastal Georgia combines a beautiful location by the ocean with a strong program in radiologic science. Students may pursue a Career Associate of Science degree in Radiologic Science at this school.

Students may also consider options in Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, or, further afield, in Texas.

Large Employers in Radiology

Large hospitals and medical centers usually have the highest number of total positions for radiologists, and also tend to offer the most competitive salaries and benefits. Four of the hospitals in Georgia have been nationally ranked by the US News & World Report.
