Radiologic science jobs are increasing nationwide, and New York – where five of the largest employers in the whole state are hospitals – is a promising location in which to hunt for a health science career.

Students looking for a certificate or degree in the state will find also find a very large number of programs from which to choose. New York has some of the highest average salaries to be found in the field of radiologic technology, although this is somewhat balanced out by the high cost of living in the state.

Prerequisite Courses

Radiologic technology requires applicants to have at least a high school diploma or GED. You may also need to take some prerequisite courses such as; human anatomy, biology, and chemistry. In addition, some programs may require courses in medical terminology and mathematics.

Duties of Rad Techs

Radiologic technologists in New York can expect to work with radiologists, using a variety of x-ray and imaging equipment to diagnose diseases and injuries. Radiology technologists also must be knowledgeable of patient safety issues, radiation safety protocols, laws governing the use of medical imaging devices, and keeping accurate records.

Radiology Requirements in New York

Rad techs, radiation therapists, and radiologist assistants in New York must pass the state exam or the national exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Radiologist assistants must be licensed as specialist assistants. Radiologic technologists must complete at least 24 hours of continuing education credits every two years, and mammography technologists must complete at least 15 hours of mammography-specific units every two years.

 

Radiologic Technology Schools in New York

You will need to find a radiologic technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

  • CUNY New York City College of Technology: CUNY New York City College of Technology, City Tech, is part of the extended City University of New York system. The program at City Tech offers two separate degree tracks for students. The first track culminates in a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Radiologic Technology degree, while the second culminates in a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Radiological Science degree. To be accepted into the BS program, students must first earn their AAS or a certificate in limited-scope radiography.
  • St. John’s University: St. John’s University is a private university located in New York City. This well-regarded school offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Radiologic Sciences through its College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. This program will provide students with a well-rounded education in addition to a professional degree.

Other Schools to Consider Rad Tech Program

The state offers several opportunities for aspiring radiologic technologists to study at schools affiliated directly with large medical centers.

  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering School of Radiation Therapy: The Memorial Sloan-Kettering program gives students the chance to study at one of top cancer diagnostic and treatment centers in the state. Individuals in this program will receive training specific to oncology (the study of cancer) radiation technology.
  • St Joseph’s Medical Center School of Radiography: The program at St. Joseph’s gives students incredible hands-on experience in general practice radiologic technology, culminating in an Associate of Science degree in Radiologic Technology.

The average annual salary for radiologic technologists in New York State is well above the national average for this profession.

The current average salary is $76,920 per year in New York, compared to $61,370 per year nationwide.

Professional Organizations

The main professional organization for radiologic technologists in New York state is the New York State Society of Radiologic Sciences. The goal of this society is to promote the interests of radiologic science professionals in the state and to maintain education standards across New York.

The review committee on education requirements and licensing is the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The ARRT is responsible for setting the standards for radiologic technology education and licensure. In New York, radiologic technologists must be certified by the ARRT to practice.
