There is also a range of strong programs in radiologic technology for individuals who want to earn an associate degree or baccalaureate degree in the field.
Radiology Requirements in North Carolina
There are no state-mandated requirements for working in the field of radiologic technology and the use of X-ray equipment. Nevertheless, most, if not all, employers of X-ray technicians and radiologic science professionals will require that their employees be certified by another state or by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT.) Students and current professionals in this field should be prepared to sit for the ARRT exam to keep their professional options open.
Radiologic Technology Schools in North Carolina
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: The UNC Department of Allied Health Sciences offers a radiography certificate program in cooperation with Alamance Regional Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center, and University of North Carolina Healthcare. This program will qualify graduates to sit for the ARRT limited scope exam and to practice as limited license X-ray technicians in states that permit limited scope practice.
Carolinas College of Health Sciences: This small school in Charlotte allows students to earn two-year Associate of Science degrees in either Radiologic Technology or Radiation Therapy. The programs allow students to learn in intimate, small-class environments while gaining clinical experience in working radiology centers. This program provides students with an introduction to advanced imaging techniques such as sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Other Schools to Consider
Central Piedmont Community College: Central Piedmont Community College is a large school in the city of Charlotte, where students in radiologic technology will find many potential employers upon graduation. This school offers a specialized program in non-invasive cardiology technology, also known as cardiac ultrasound sonography. The program is a rare opportunity for students to specialize in the well-paying field of cardiovascular imaging.
Wake Technical Community College: Wake Technical Community College in the Raleigh-Durham area has a fairly standard program allowing students to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree in radiography. Raleigh-Durham is another densely populated area with a large number of potential employers.
Public education costs are usually higher for out-of-state students (while private costs remain the same). Taking that into account, North Carolina students may wish to look over the border to Augusta and Atlanta, Knoxville or Nashville, south to Myrtle Beach or Charleston, or north to Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Richmond, or Roanoke.
Large Employers in Radiology
Major hospitals and medical centers are the largest single employers of radiologic technology professionals. North Carolina has many excellent hospitals, including four facilities that have been nationally ranked by the US News & World Report.
