Georgia is also a great place to study, with a young population and many degree programs in many schools around the state. These programs include many opportunities to pursue an advanced degree, which are relatively rare nationwide.
Radiology Requirements in Georgia
There are no state-mandated requirements to practice radiologic science in the state of Georgia. However, almost all respected employers of radiologic technologists will require their employees to be licensed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Beginning in 2015, the ARRT will require all persons who wish to sit for their exam to have a minimum of an associate’s degree. Individuals who already have an associate’s degree or higher will not need to earn an associate’s in radiologic technology to be eligible.
Radiologic Technology Schools in Georgia
Emory University: This renowned university offers an RT to BMSc degree program in Medical Imaging. Currently credentialed radiographers (RTs) with an associate’s degree have the opportunity to complete a baccalaureate degree in either CT, MRI, interventional radiography (IR), women’s health (mammography & bone densitometry), radiography education, or radiology administration. With a bachelor’s degree from Emory University, graduates can advance rapidly within the profession and secure higher-payer positions.
Please note: Advanced coursework in interventional radiology and women’s health (mammography and bone densitometry) will be discontinued in 2021. Students admitted to the program after 2018 will no longer be offered advanced coursework in these two areas.
Chattahoochee Technical College: Chattahoochee Technical College has been ranked as one of the best two-year colleges in Georgia by Campus Explorer. The North Metro Campus offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiologic Technology. The curriculum centers around preparing graduates to sit for the ARRT exam.
Other Schools to Consider Radiologic Technology Program
Augusta University: The Medical College of Georgia and Georgia Health Sciences University have recently combined to form Augusta University. The Radiation Therapy department offers a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences degree with a major in Radiation Therapy. Nuclear Medicine Technology is also offered as a baccalaureate degree program for credentialed NMTs. Both programs prepare graduates for highly-skilled positions at higher salary levels.
College of Coastal Georgia: The College of Coastal Georgia combines a beautiful location by the ocean with a strong program in radiologic science. The school offers an Associate of Science degree in Radiologic Science for those seeking entry-level technologist positions in hospitals, clinics, or private physician’s offices. Many four-year institutions offer elective credit for successful completion of the ARRT examination. This allows program graduates an increased opportunity to pursue a baccalaureate degree.
Students may also consider options in Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, or, further afield, Texas.
Large Employers in Radiology
Large hospitals and medical centers usually have the highest number of total positions for radiologists, and also tend to offer the most competitive salaries and benefits. Four of the hospitals in Georgia have been nationally ranked by the US News & World Report.
