Requirements in South Dakota

South Dakota does not set state licensing requirements for professionals in the field of radiologic technology. Nevertheless, almost all employers of radiologic technologists and X-ray technicians will require that they be certified through another state exam or the national American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam. The only regular exception to this requirement is for limited-scope X-ray technicians, who may only need to complete an accredited course to practice.

Radiologic Technology Schools in South Dakota

University of Sioux Falls: The University of Sioux Falls is a small, Christian liberal arts college in the town of Sioux Falls in southeastern South Dakota. The school offers a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences degree through its department of biology and natural science. The program is appropriate for new radiologic science students, as well as professionals who have completed a non-degree program certified by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and want to apply their studies toward a baccalaureate. The University of Sioux Falls also offers the option of an Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Technology. Avera McKennan School of Radiologic Technology: The Avera McKennan School program allows students to study in a very hands-on environment with a curriculum that exceeds the JRCERT requirements. The school does not confer degrees directly, but it has affiliation agreements through many schools in the area (including the University of Sioux Falls) that allow students to earn either a two-year or a four-year degree through their training at Avera McKennan.

Other Schools to Consider Radiologic Technology Programs

Mitchell Technical Institute: The Mitchell Technical Institute offers an Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology degree. The school is located in the small town of Mitchell in eastern South Dakota. The program takes approximately two years to complete. Avera Sacred Heart Hospital: Avera Sacred Heart Hospital offers students another opportunity to pursue clinical studies in a functioning hospital environment while taking advantage of affiliation agreements with degree-granting institutions to earn an associate or baccalaureate degree. Schools with which Avera Sacred Heart partners are Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD, St. Cloud State University in MN, University of Jamestown in ND, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney, NE. Degrees offered through affiliates are only baccalaureate and not associate. Out of state, if you don’t mind traveling, you’ll find more options in Des MoinesMinneapolis, and Lincoln.

Allied Health Education Programs in South Dakota

The South Dakota Office of Rural Health and Primary Care offers an array of programs in allied health, including radiology tech. These programs can help you become certified as a radiologic technician or X-ray technician through the ARRT certification process. Additionally, the state has several other educational opportunities for those interested in medical imaging and diagnostic technology, such as the South Dakota Health Careers Academy and the South Dakota Primary Care Scholars Program. Both of these programs offer hands-on training in a variety of medical imaging techniques, including radiologic technology.
