Prerequisite Courses for Radiology Technology

Before enrolling in a radiologic technology program, prospective students must take 21 semester hours of prerequisites. These courses include English, math, biological sciences, physical sciences, and other related courses such as medical terminology.

Radiographic Procedures

Radiologic technology students learn to use the proper practices and techniques for radiographic procedures. This includes understanding proper patient positioning, manipulating x-ray equipment controls, and medical imaging, and understanding radiation safety principles.

Clinical Practice

A major component of all accredited Texas radiology technologist schools is a clinical practicum experience. The aim is to prepare students and enable students to gain hands-on practice and clinical skills in a hospital or imaging center while under the supervision of a certified radiologic technologist through clinical rotations.

Responsibilities of Radiologic Technologists

Radiologic technologists are responsible for performing diagnostic imaging procedures, such as radiography and computed tomography scans, as ordered by a physician. They must also ensure that all radiation safety protocols are followed, keep accurate records of patient data, and be familiar with the latest advances in technology.

Texas Radiologic Technologist Requirements

The state of Texas requires almost all radiologic science professionals to take the state exam or the national exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). This includes radiographers, nuclear medicine technicians, radiation therapists, and limited-license X-ray technicians.

Texas does recognize professionals known as non-certified technicians (NCTs) who may perform non-hazardous procedures without state or national certification. Professionals who have been certified in another state with identical requirements may practice in Texas. All professionals must complete 24 hours of continuing education credits every two years, except for a limited license, which must complete 12.

Most states require that radiologic technologists become licensed to practice. In Texas, the  Texas Medical Board is responsible for licensure. Requirements include having a minimum of an associate degree from an accredited program, passing the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification exam, and completing several relevant classes during the study.

Radiologic Technology Schools in Texas

Radiologic technology schools in texas include;

Austin Community College District: The community college system in the state capital of Austin offers a Diagnostic Medical Imaging Radiology Program that culminates in an associate degree. After the program, graduates should be qualified to successfully sit for the ARRT certification exam. Students may also pursue specialized areas of study in the fields of diagnostic medical sonography, magnetic resonance imaging, or cardiovascular intervention procedures.

Midwestern State University: Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, TX is a public liberal arts university offering both two and four-year degrees. This school offers a wide range of programs in radiologic science to students who want to pursue either minimum or advanced degrees. The programs offered are the Computed Tomography certificate, the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology, the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences, and the Master of Science in Radiologic Sciences. Students in the master’s program may choose to pursue a track to becoming a radiologist assistant.

Other Schools to Consider Radiologic Technology Program

El Centro College: El Centro College is located in the downtown center of the city of Dallas. This community college offers an Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Science degree. This popular program can be competitive due to the limited number of clinical rotation spots available.

Other options exist out-of-state, in Baton Rouge and Little Rock to the east, Oklahoma City to the north, and Albuquerque to the west. A little further afield, consider WichitaColorado Springs, or Denver. Remember that public institutions, such as community colleges, will charge higher tuition fees to out-of-state students.

Applied science degree, certificate, and Bachelor of Science in Radiology are just some of the programs you can find. If you want to become a certified radiologic technologist, you must attend an accredited school with JRCERT accredited program designed specifically for radiologic technology.

Allied Health Education Programs in Texas

In addition to schools offering programs in radiologic technology, there are also several Allied Health Education Programs (AHEP) in the state of Texas. These programs offer a variety of courses covering topics related to healthcare, such as medical terminology and medical coding. Other courses may introduce students to nutrition, infection control, anatomy and physiology, and medical office procedures. These programs are designed to provide students with the necessary education and experience to become healthcare professionals.

Large Employers in Radiology

The occupational employment statistics for radiologic technologists in Texas are promising.

Overall, the job outlook for radiology professionals in Texas is positive
